JOHN-JOHN-JOHN-JOHN-CRATON-REV.WILLIAM (1-5-1-1-7-5)

REV. WILLIAM was b 3 Nov 1788 near Braddocks Grove, Pa. d 3 Aug 1857 in Smite Co., Miss.,1 md 14 Sept 1815 in Charleston, So. C. Martha DuBose b 20 Apr 1797 in Darlington, S. C., d 22 Mar 1862 in Centerville, Miss. She was the dau of Daniel DuBose who served in the Am. Revol. as Capt. of S. C. Volunteers, and a direct descendant of Isaac DuBose, a French Huguenot, who came from Dieppe, Normandy, France to settle in S. C. in 1689. Rev. William adopted the ministry and became a Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the founder of the second church of that denomination in La. and held the first Protestant Sunday School in N. C.
Ref: Old Families of Louisiana, Published in 1931, Harmanson, Publisher, New Or1eans.

Two death dates are given for Rev. William--8 Aug 1857 and 31 Aug 1857. Martha's mother was Mary (Nettles) DuBose. William's father died when he was 2 yrs old leaving his widow and 5 small children.

The following exerpts were taken from a diary written by Dr. Winans and published in 1891 by Goodspeed in Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Mississippi. "My mother was poor and dependent upon the labor of her own hands, with the slight assistance of her older children. She was, I believe, the most industrious human being I ever knew. I scarcely ever saw her unoccupied, day or night". "We never wanted bread to eat nor raiment to wear, and besides this, our careful mother taught, or had us taught, to read". "When I was two my mother removed to Ten-mile Creek in Greene Co., Pa., where she remained some seven years and then removed to George's Creek, Fayette Co., Pa. near Union Town. Here we continued until I was sixteen years old and then removed to Clermont, Co., Ohio, where I remained until I entered the itinerant ministry in the Methodist Episcopal Church". A. B. Hyde, D. D. professor of Greek in the University of Denver, speaks of Rev. William Winans, D. D. in the story of Methodism as "the greatest of the Methodists in the Southwest". In the Southwest he was the right man for the region, and here for forty five years he employed his wonderful energies of mind and body. His personal appearance was striking.

As a writer he issued a wide and choice circle of Biblical literature, including a volume of Discourses on Fundamental Subjects, and enduring monument (large octavo,

This information was combined from data taken from the "Old Families of Louisiana" published in 1931; Harmanson, Published, New Orleans, and "Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Mississippi" published in 1891 by Goodspeed Pub. Co. Also; Mrs. Susan S. Watson of Chattanooga, Tenn. was very helpful in copying material from this publication, B. & H. Memoirs of Mississippi.
