In 1664, my 7g-grandfather John Winans was among the founders, not only of Elizabeth, New Jersey, but also of the First Presbyterian Church there. His descendants have resided in the Elizabeth area down to the present. It isn't surprising, therefore, that there are many Winans burials in the church's graveyard. John himself may be buried in the churchyard, but either his stone is no longer legible or his grave was covered up by the expansion and rebuilding of the historic church.

In the late 1800s, two researchers whose ancestors are buried at the Presbyterian church recorded all the inscriptions then legible in the church's cemetery. The result was Inscriptions on tombstones and monuments in the burying grounds of the First Presbyterian Church and St. Johns Church at Elizabeth, New Jersey, 1664-1892, by William Ogden Wheeler and Edmund D. Halsey, Elizabeth, NJ, 1892, which is now available at ancestry.com. Their book lists more than 2,000 grave markers, including not only many Winans, but also numerous persons with such other surnames of interest as Hatfield, Woodruff and Marsh. The St. John's Church section doesn't list any Winans burials.

I have tried to preserve here the unique style, capitalization, punctuation, etc., of the authors' tombstone transcriptions. It is possible there are errors in this page which were either made by the stonecutters who inscribed the monuments, were present in the original book, or which I've introduced in my transcription of it. There are persons with other surnames whose markers are interspersed among the Winans graves who may be related, but I have included only identifiable Winans burials in this page. I hope this list will help you locate your ancestors who are buried at Elizabethtown. There are many individuals with similar names here, so please search for all occurrences of a name before giving up.

The number at the beginning of each stone's entry appears to have no meaning other than as an index number in the book. It is sometimes referred to by Mrs. Egy when she mentions an Elizabethtown burial in her book. Each stone is assigned a single number, even if it marks the burial place of several persons. The number is followed by a letter, which indicates the material from which the marker was constructed:

1 The code in brackets is Mrs. Egy's i.d., which points to what I hope is this individual's entry in our transcription of her book.
2A stone which appears to be newer than those of Ruth and Deborah on either side of it, was erected for Moses' grave in place of the one listed above, and was photographed by Glen Winans.
3 If this Benjamin is indeed the father of Hannah C., listed immediately above him, and the husband of Annabel, whose entry follows his, then his age is listed incorrectly here. Mrs. Egy gives a birth year for Benjamin of 1776/7, which appears to fit better with this family.
4 After Theodore died in 1901, he was buried along with his family. A new stone was erected, in place of the one listed above, which was seen and transcribed by Mrs. Egy in 1961 and photographed by Glen Winans in 2005.
