Essex County.

~1695John Winans dies and most of his children go to Fairfield county, CT, to live with their mother's family.
Jul 1710My 5g-grandfather, Jonathan Winans, is born to Conrad and Susannah Winans. (It is possible he was born in CT where his parents were married.)
May 1731Jonathan Winans marries Susannah Mills.
Sep 1737My 4g-grandmother, Sarah Winans, is born in Elizabethtown to Jonathan and Susannah. Her future husband, and my 4g-grandfather, David Clark, is born at about the same time in the same area.
Mar 1746My 4g-grandfather, Samuel Winans, is born, also to Jonathan and Susannah.
~1759My 3g-grandfather, George Carey, is born.
~1762Sarah Winans and David Clark are married.

1800/1825Elizabethtown residents, including many Winans, Careys, Clarks, Frazees, Woodruffs, etc., trek westward to Miami county, OH. One of the last families to move is that of Stephen and Lottie Winans, who may not have left NJ until after the birth of their last child in 1820

Somerset County.

1780-1820Some of the Careys, Clarks, Winans, etc., come here from Essex county and live in the Basking Ridge and Mendham areas for awhile before moving on to Ohio.

Union County.

1857Union county is formed out of Essex county. Elizabethtown (now known as Elizabeth), and other towns where our ancestors lived, are a part of Union county now. Nevertheless we're including information on this area under Essex county above. Some Winans families have remained in the Elizabeth area until recent times, such as that of Edward Winans.
