Some time in the 1840s, my great-great-grandparents, John and Mary Ann Perry, and their children, floated down the Ohio River from Venango county, PA, to Gallia county, OH, where they lived briefly before moving on to Piqua, in Miami county, Ohio. They arrived in Piqua between the births of Mary Elizabeth in April 1848 in Gallia and William in September 1850 in Miami. They were enumerated in Piqua 17 August by the federal census taker. This deed, which represents John and Mary Ann's initial acquisition of property in Miami county, was transcribed by cousin Kelly Conrad:

Know all men by these presents that we J Augustus Root and Sarah E. Root wife of said J Augustus Root [sic: omits residence info] in Consideration of the sum of Three Hundred Dollars in hand paid by John Perry [sic: omits residence info] do hereby release remise and forever quit claim unto the said John Perry his heirs and assigns forever all our title interest and estate legal and Equitable in the following premises with the appurtenances Situate in the County of Miami and State of Ohio and described as follows viz Lot Number Seven (7) in Young & Dodds addition to the Town of Piqua as recorded in the Original Plat of said addition but now Known as Lot No (86) [sic]1 according to the New numbering of said Town of Piqua In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals the 18th day of February AD 1850
