A Logan County Diary

I visited western Ohio a number of times from 1949 on. My father's Carey relatives lived in Urbana and Springfield. His Plank relatives lived in Bellefontaine, although earlier they had lived in West Liberty, or Liberty township. The diary which you see below was more than 50 pages long and was transcribed by a cousin, Betty-Ellen Crum. It was written by her great-grandmother, Emma Matrona Kenaga, who traveled from Greenville, in Bond county, Illinois, to Logan county, Ohio, in 1897 when she was 21 years old to visit her relatives. There are many references in it to people whose names are familiar to me and may also be familiar to you, but the journal is even more interesting for its description of everyday life in the area where our ancestors lived more than a century ago.

This same diary in annotated format is also available below.

Left Greenville October 27, 1897 at 12:15 A.M. Arrived at Urbana October 29 at 10:05 am, left Urbana at 11:43 am, arrived Bellfontaine 12:30. Went to a "Grocery and Dry Goods Store", inquired for John Yoder and was directed to 206 E. Spring St. Tapped at door; Johnny met me. I asked if it was where John Yoder lived; he said "yes" invited me in, and then I told him I was his cousin, but he did not know me until I told him; and Oh! how surprised.

Am still at Johnnys this being Saturday afternoon; have had such a plesant time; so much for October 29.____

Had a great time, sleeping that eve; came to Lydias Monday morn; began raining Sunday night, and is still at it this Tuesday morn; have had some gay times; was weighed last eve, and tipped the scales at 111 lbs. So much for today.

Nov. 18

Milton and I went to Mr. Hugh Newell's last evening; had lovely time; there were present Mr. Hail and Miss Deitrick, and Louis Yoder the evening was spent in talking, eating apples, etc., this morning it is rather frosty and the ground is frozen. Mr. Plank went to town yesterday afternoon and I received three letters. Oh! how glad I was to hear from my friends.

Nov. 27, 1897

It has been so long since I have written in here that I fear I have forgotten some of the many things that have happened. On Friday, Nov., 20, Mrs. Plank and I went to Jake Kauffman's; stayed until Saturday afternoon, when I rode back to Lydias with Menno Yoder's.

Lydia King my second cousin and Fannie Duetwiler were there also; they went to church at Walnut Grove that night.

Sunday morn went to Mr. Plank, thence to Jonas for dinner; in the afternoon we went to Davies; that night to Church; Monday afternoon Addie and I went to Anna's then took in the town: was at Anna's that night; went with Anna to Mrs. Kauffman's on Tuesday; she is the Christian Minister and her husband had died some two weeks before and was taken to Ansonia, to be buried; she and daughter returned on the noon train, and a number of their friends had come in and had dinner for them; we had a nice time though sorrowful. Was at Jonas' Tuesday night and Wednesday morn Nancy and I spent the day at Davie's, went to Church at night and also Tuesday night. Thursday morn went to Jonas' home then to Anna's, went to the Christian Church for Thanksgiving Sermon, preached by Rev. Pope the Methodist Minister (But was a very poor sermon) Went to Jonas' for dinner, there being present, Sam Plank and family, Davie and family, and myself. had a good dinner and a fine time; came to Davies that evening and have been here ever since; have had a dreadful cold, and spent some miserable nights, coughing this afternoon Ella and I drove out to Jake Planks to get another dress, and some medicine and what should happen, but when we got home and I looked for my medicine; behold it wasn't there, and I can't imagine what became of it.unless I dropped it at the buggy when we started home. Davie says I did not have it, at all, just left it sitting on the table out there, but I know better than that! I had it when I left the house. So much for this eve.

Dec. 6

Again I have waited quite a long time to write but will attempt to write everything tht happened in the past week. Last Sunday, I had such a bad cold that I did not go to church but stayed at Davies; Fannie Yoder, Verdie and Aunt Lydia came there from church in the afternoon we went up to Anna's. Davie tries to make the baby call me Auntie, but of course she will not, as she can not talk. I stayed at Anna's all week; Monday we washed; we went to Mr. Hills on Tuesday had a splendid time; left there about three o'clock and went to Mrs. Littenger's to have Anna's dress fit, came back and stopped at Mrs. Kershner's a few minutes and then went to Davies after the boys.

We went to Eli on Wednesday. Harold was sick all day but got well soon. Thursday we intended to go to Lizzie M's but as Eli was coming to town he overtook Lizzie and she said she was compelled to go to her mother's, so we decided to go out there too. When we got there Aunt Barbara was not at home and Lizzie was not there. They said, Aunt Barbara was at Mr. Fetts and after dinner John went after her, she said Lizzie was there;and said for us to come down there Tuesday; but we decided not to go now until we get ready. That afternoon John went to sleep sitting in the rocking-chair and Mr. Plank thought when we came home that he had better not go away any more when they did not stay home, and went to sleep while we were there. But we will not be beat out like that.

Thursday night we went to prayer-meeting Friday. Fannie and children came by in the carriage and we went to Aunt Lydia's. I had to hold Clyde and he did not like me one bit; we had a lovely time. ate apples and pop-corn That evening Anna and I went down town and got some oyster crackers, and butter and oh my! but we did eat supper.

I helped Anna with her work Saturday morn and in the afternoon I went down to Addie's that morning Ella came over, and Addie popped some corn; the next morn we did not get up until nine o'clock. Davie and Ella came about 10:30; Addie was not ready, so I went out to Rudy's with them; then Davie drove back, and met Jonas and Addie at the railroad, and brought them out in the evening we came back in the buggy and Davie and Jonas walked.

Then I came back to Annas and Mr. Plank and I went to C.C. then Anna came to church; this afternoon I am going to Mr. Kavanage's funeral. Mr. Plank has charge of it.

Dec 7

Went to funeral yesterday afternoon and when I came back Jake had been to Annas after me so I changed my dress got my things ready and he drove by for me; when we came home there was a fruit tree agent here, and he thought I surely cane from a fine state, as he had been over the greater part of Illinois. It is rather cold this morn the ground is frozen hard.

Dec. 9

Jonas' and Davie's were out, Tuesday, Dec 7, 1897; we had turkey for dinner; had such a nice time; Nancy tried to get the boys to subscribe for some religious papers, but failed.

Wednesday morn Nancy and I washed in the afternoon, went to Christ Yoders to watch the chopping machine work; they were butchering; we washed dishes for Katie; when we came home Nancy took some of the clothes off the line and left them sit in the basket out in the yard, and the pigs got into the basket, so she had to wash some of the clothes again; I am writing this with Little Bertha, piling quilt scraps on my right arm, and talking as hard as she can; now she is piling them on my foot and it is so hard for me to keep my foot still.

It is very foggy this morn and looks like rain. So much for this morn.

Dec. 11

Friday, December 10th Nancy and I went to Menns Yoders' on our way home we came past the wonderful Piatt Castle and the Nash mansions; they are simply grand; we also stopped in Liberty; went to the new store and to see Uncle Dave and Davie; I received my mitten; floss and breast pieces was most awfully glad to get them.On the way home, I tormented some little youngsters and Nancy said I was bad, "but to have my fun while young", as I will take her advice. As we were going to Menno's we saw Menns and Dan Yan in the woods. and we didn't do a thing but wave at them and of course Menns waved his hat, too.

Mr. Yoder gave me some quinine tablets and I took them so I feel rather flighty this morn. Nancy went to Amos this morn. I want to go to town this afternoon, have a postal order I want to get cashed. It rained last night and is still cloudy this morn and looks like rain.

Dec 15

Went to town Saturday afternoon, bought some Candy at Heukles grocery and Jake and I ate candy coming home. I went down to Amos' that eve; stayed all night and the next day. Martez (Matthes) was there and how we did laugh at the poor, old mortal; Monday Lydia and I washed and that afternoon Sheirr (can't decipher -- Sheur?) Kauffman and wife from Pennsylvania came. Yesterday Jake, Lydia, Bertha and I came to Uncle Jonas'; we stopped in Bellfontaine and bought some oyster crackers so had oysters for dinner last eve. Jonas went to Champaign County to marry Joe Kenagy and Sallie Duetwiler; it is raining to day and will be rather bad for the wedding. Mems Hartzler's wife died last eve; will be buried this afternoon (so long)

Dec 16. Thursday Morn.

Aunt Fannie and I went to Eli's S. yesterday morn; stayed until after dinner, when Alpha came down and hitched their colt to Eli's buggy; then Aunt and I drove up home; Topsy did not want to go by the engine one bit, but I finally succeeded in getting her past.

Aunt went to the funeral with Elmira, and I went with Eli's. saw Sam Plank; wanted to know if I was not going home with him; told him I would be down week from Friday. This morning we are going to Elmira's. So much for today.

Dec 17

Went to Elmira's yesterday' Uncle Jonas and Alpha went to Bellefontaine; came to Elmiras for dinner had a splendid time; came to Ella's last night, it had been raining and freezing to-day and now it is turning colder. want to stay with Elmira tonight if it is so I can get there.

Dec 18

Came to Elmira's yesterday afternoon it was very cold last night and the ground is frozen hard, and it has been snowing a little today. Aunt Fannie and Clara came down this afternoon; Elmira said to write that she had been baking mince pies. (so long)

Dec 20

Was at Uncle Jonas' Saturday night, and yesterday Alpha and I stayed at home. I had dinner ready when the folks came back from church; we had a nice time and at night went to Young Peoples meeting; went by the way of the county house. This morn I went to Ellas and did my washing. She washed and fried beef.

The roads were slick as glass this morn, it rained and froze is still raining but is not as cold as it was. Mr. Stultzfus and Mrs. Hartzler were here for dinner.

Dec 23

Tuesday Dec 21 it was very cold and the roads were still covered with ice and it was very cloudy. That morn Alpha went to Huntsville and had Topsy shod. (I forgot the most important event of Monday, so here goes; that night we made taffy, and Oh! what a time; we did not cook it enough and how it did stick; yes, and I laughed too hard, for the next day I had the head-ache and bad, too.)

Wednesday, Dec 22, Alpha and I went to Bellefontaine; we went past the Childrens Home, and crossed over the new railroad cut, and Gracious! I thought the buggy was going to fall on the horse, but we made it all right; drove down to Johnny's and he was just eating breakfast it being ten o'clock, we stayed there about half hour then went to John Hartzler's. Johnny also came down. We had a nice visit and about two o'clock went up town; when we started from Mr. Hartzler's, Alpha had the horse in a gallop and the buggy came very near going over as we turned the corner.

We went to several different Stores and all through the China Hall and saw so many lovely things. Oh Yes! we went through Wednesday. Coming home, we had quite a time, and that night I went to Ellas'; Today we have been eating candy, and playing Tiddley Winks, until I am most awfully tired.

It snowed all day yesterday but today has not been snowing much, but is colder.

Dec 29

Thursday night, December 24, I was at Elmira's. Alpha and Fannie were over too; we spent the evening in singing; had a nice time; Friday morn Alpha and Uncle took me to Huntsville I took the ten o'clock train and went to Liberty; was at Anna's Christmas day, and had a nice time; I got a picture for present Sunday, I went to S.S. Mr. Reardon came home with us, for dinner. That evening Mr. Plank, Carl and I went to C.E. and preaching; had such a good meeting. In the morning we had listened to a talk between Eugene Reardon and Mrs. Kershnen, on divine healing, and it was very interesting.

Monday Morn I went to Uncle Dave's; stayed until Tuesday eve. met the Misses Stultzfus and had quite an enjoyable time.

Some of the young people met at Annas' Tuesday eve. those present were; Mrs. Kerchner, Misses Anna Kershner, Arrie Brown, Belle Ewings, Katie Hastings and Nellie Reardon; the evening was spent in singing and talking.

Wednesday it was snowing when we got up and continued until noon, when it began to blow. Miss Benjamin came over and took care of Kiumey, while Anna and I went calling; Ewings Hastings and Reardon; Mrs. Reardon was not at home, but we spent a very pleasant time with Mr. Reardon.

Wednesday eve. Anna and husband went to a reception at the college, in honor of Prof. March and wife; I stayed at home, and took care of Kiumey, This morning Mr. Plank brought me out to South Union where the Dutch people had a Conference; Lydia and I came home about 2:30; I expect to go back to-night.

January 5, 1898

Did not go to conference on Wednesday night; Jake had the headache and I was not particular about going; Nancy rode home with Amos Hartzler. The next morning Dec 31, 1897 the ground was covered with snow.

January 6, 1897

Yesterday Sarah and I were home alone: Dave having gone to help Rudi Yoder's butcher. Mrs. Whitman came down in the afternoon, and, when Dave came home, we got weighed: Mrs. Whitman tipped the scales at 132 lbs. Sarah at 135 lbs.: Edna, 35 lbs. Fannie, 20 lbs. and I 125 lbs,. My; but am I getting fat; can hardly wear some of my clothes.

Yesterday evening I came up to Nancy's; she had gone to Champaign, and was not at home, yet, but soon came. Last eve we talked about the Dutch people and what they thought of such people as we; of course, we are of the world, to their minds.

It is raining this morn, and the snow will soon be gone. I washed dishes for Nancy this morn and combed Ellen's hair; I am going to iron for Nancy, so much hurry. Have been having a dreadful headache the last two days, and feel as though I would have it to-day.

Jan 8, Satuday eve

I had a letter from home Wednesday and Sallie said Manda wanted to bring her straps there; I wrote to her that night but did not get it mailed until to-day. I came to Uriahs yesterday Morn.

Nancy helped me up with my bundles it was so very icy, we could hardly walk. Had such a nice time while at Nancys. This has been a lovely day, just like spring, so much for this time.

January 12, Wednesday morn.

Sunday morn, Jakes stopped at Uriahs, as they went to church and gave me three lettes; and I was glad to get them, Lydia Ann, Mrs. Lantz and I went to church at Walnut Grove but there were only a few out; it began to rain and freeze and when church was over it was slick. Lizzie Detweiler went home with them. I rode back part way until I met Jakes; got in with them and came home. When we got home Mr. Brindle was here and we had quite a nice time that afternoon.

Monday morniing it was foggy and damp so we did not go anywhere yesterday, Tuesday, Lydia and I washed; we hung the clothes out but it was damp all day and this morn it is raining part of the time and so very cloudy. we had intended to go to Mr. Dan Yoders' but had to give it up. I have just finished mending my stockings, and now I want to pop the collar of my dress, it is too tight. I was weighed Monday and tipped the scales at 120 lbs. so guess the stock scales were not correct. I have been having the head-ache for about a week; most evry day, but otherwise am feeling very good.

Jan 15, 1898

Wednesday afternoon Lydia and I went to Amos'. I stayed all night; and that night Mr. Rise fruit tree agent, was there; we had a very pleasant out evening. Amos and Nancy gave me such a lovely tea pot, just large enough for my beau and me, so Amos said. Thursday eve Amos and Nancy went to Mrs. Samuel Headings funeral; I rode with them as far as Jakes; I stayed there and had dinner most ready when they came home.

Friday morn, Lewis came up to see if I would go to Miltons school, but Lydia and I had made out to go to Mr. Lapps so I could not go. We went to Lapps and in the afternoon to Jake Zooks' I wrote a letter while there, and we came through town and mailed it.

This morn it is raining and is cold.

January 18

Saturday I was home all day, it was Rainy and disagreable; Sunday, Nancy and I stayed at home from church; Jake Kauffmans' came there for dinner; we had quite an enjoyable time in the afternoon.

Jake introduced me to Mr. Thomas Zook from Pennsylvania, he is a second cousin. Monday morn I washed and Jake killed a calf; Mr. Jake Liechty was there for dinner. Nancy is having quite a time with her face; she has a boil on the temple.

This (Tues) morning Jake brought me up to Ike Yoders, this eve Milton, Katie and I went to McKees Creek to meeting; Mrs. Kershner preached such a good sermon, on destructiveness of sin and had one converted; the house was crowded; we came home and I read some of Lucile. Milton is writing and I am dressed already for bed but thought I had better write some of the many happenings down, before I retired. So-Good-night.

January, 20, 1898

This morning it is raining and blowing, with all the combined furies of elements it rained all night yesterday Katie and I went to Miltons school and stayed all day; had a splendid time; I read some from American Author, Sam Jones' Sermons and other books also wrote a letter; Katie went to sleep and Milton brought her some books. and told her he wanted no sleeping in time of school, and how she did jump! Last evening I sat up and read until 10:30 and when I retired I could sleep quite well. I am still reading Lucile, (by Owen Meredith) and am becoming interested in it. This is a fine place to come for we have such nice times. So much for today.

Jan 21

Last evening Milton took Alta and I to Bethel church; it was rather windy and somewhat dark. we drove Net and had such a lovely time, especially on the way home. Mr. Mitzler preached taking for his text, "What shall I do to be saved?" but he did not stick to his text very well, preached about Faith and Hope Three persons went forward. When we started home, the hitching slip and lines were unstrapped, but the horse was there, all right. I have not been feeling the best in the world to-day; it is a gloomy day, and getting somewhat colder.

Jan 22, 1898

It is sleeting this morn, and such a dreary day, as it is going to be. Last evening I was not feeling the finest, but this morn am all o.k. have been spending too much time reading.

Jan 23

It began raining yesterday about 10 o'clock and continued to rain all day; last night it began to blow, and I thought the house was going to blow away. It broke the window in the room, and kept the bell ringing all the time. It is snowing and blowing now, with great fury,

Jan 25

Milton brought the girls and I over to Mennos, Sunday; it was blowing tolerably hard but had quit snowing; on our way over we had quite a time; a tree had blown across the road just beyond Sinious' hill, and we had to turn around and go back a short distance; I am at Mennos, now; yesterday was a lovely day, but it is cloudy this morn and looks like it might storm.

Jan 27

Loma and I came over to Aunt Lydias yesterday it was snowing when we came over and was cloudy all day. this morning it is lovely; the sun is shining brightly and everything looks so pretty; the ground is frozen hard, Archie and Harvey went to church at Zanesfield last evening; I am going to write some letters this morning, dropped my watch last evening and it will not run now. I wonder if I will ever learn to be careful.

Jan 28,_______Friday eve.

I wrote two letters Thursday morn. and in the afternoon Lydia and I went to Bellefontaine; it was blowing and snowing with great force, when we started, but turned off very pretty. Harvey took us to the Methodist church at Zanesfield last evening; they had quite an interesting meeting; Mr Casille is the minister.

I worked on my quilt to day. This has been a lovely day. The sun shone brightly most of the day and the ground thawed some. I am going to Fontaine tomorrow and Archie is going to get me a friendship plate. he; Harvey and Vernon went to church tonight; Lydia is churning and Aunt Lydia is reading.

Jan 30, 1898

Archie, Lydia and I went to Bellefontaine yesterday and attended the Farmers Institute; it was rather interesting; then Lydia and I ran all over the city hunting Blacks Sewing Machine office; had to walk three squares east on E. Columbus Avenue, but finally found the place. I came home with the Ike Yoders; this morn Milton and I walked to Philadelphia; Mr. Hadley is the minister and he preached quite an interesting sermon. This is a lovely day, only the east wind is rather chilly. I find I am greatly improving in health, as I could not walk any distance at all, without feeling almost worn-out but I feel fine over my walk.

February 4, 1898_____

Mr and Mrs Crist Yoder came home with Ike Yoders' Sunday from church; Alta and I went to Levi Smuckers' in the afternoon and saw the old house. went from cellar to garret that evening, we went to church at Philadelphia and after church Milton brought me to Jakes after we went home. Jake and I sat up and talked until 11:30 am. Oh my! how Nancy did give it to us the next day; she said we disturbed her, so she could not sleep; well, that was too bad.

Monday, January 31, was a stormy day; it blew and snowed all day; Melinda Lapp was at Jakes' Sunday night and Monday afternoon, Jake took her home.

Monday, February 1, was a rather nice day., only tolerably cold; Amos' butchered and Jakes helped them. Amos brought the chopping machine home and I went home with him in the wagons. On Wednesday it stormed all day and blew so very hard. I read a book from the Colportage Library, intitled "Good News"; it was quite interesting, also some extracts from Parson Brownlows' book. Amos brought me home. Thursday afternoon the thermometer registered eight degrees below zero.

Nancy and I went to Crist Yoders today (Friday) had such a pleasent time; coming home we met Rudy and Menns and snow balled them; Menns jumped out of the wagon and washed our faces. When we got home, there was a paper awaiting me, and of course had to read it. but there was not a great deal of news; So much for this time.

February 7, 1898

Jake brought me to Johnnies' Saturday morn. Alpha and Lydia went past here, Saturday afternoon on their way to Champaign and they told me they would stop this morning and I should go home with them. But here it is evening and they have not come. Johnnie and I went up town this afternoon and I purchased a pair of rubbers, but I fear they are too large and I will have to exchange them. We have been playing "Tiddley Winks" almost all day, and such times as we did have.

Johnnie and I went to Catholic meeting yesterday, It was rather amusing, sure. The afternooon Mr. Roberts and Mrs. Warmack were here and such stories as were told. I laughed so hard. This is a perfect Spring day; the sun shone brightly all day and the birds sang so sweetly; I hope it will stay this way a few days.

February 11

Monday night Johnnie and I went to Mr. Adams and the evening was spent playing dominoes and tiddly winks; we had a fine time. Tuesday Ella, Vernon and I came out to Elmiras'; Wednesday I came to Aunt Fannies; Alpha and I went to Bellefontaine; and that night we played tiddley winks, and ate ice-cream; John Hartzler and Anna King spent the evening with Uncles; I went to Ellas yesterday and this morn we came up to Uncles; I am going to Fannie Kauffman's today.

February 18, 1898

Went to Fannie Kauffman's last Friday; had a grand time; was informed about "Sling Hollow" and Brother Will, and numerous other important events; I was at Uncles Friday night. Ironed my clothes Saturday morn and about 11:30 a.m. Fannie came by in Uncle Joe's Summer Kitchen and kid and we went to her house. Must quit because it is about time to go up town.

I went to Jonas' Thursday night and stayed until Tuesday afternoon; went to Sam's then to Uncle Davies; Saturday morn Anna and I went to Lee Kauffman's; had quite a pleasant time; Johnnie and Katie came after me Sat. afternoon. Emma Matrona Kenaga married Fred Elmer McLean 31 Jan 1900. They had these children:

  1. Glada Ellen McLean, born 30 Aug 1901, died 30 Mar 1967, Betty-Ellen's grandma.
  2. Bernice McLean, born about 1903.
  3. John E. McLean, born 26 Feb 1916, died 15 May 1989.

At the time of the 1920 census, Emma and Fred and their children were living in Bond county, Illinois. Here they are in 1953:

The Annotated Diary

In this copy, notes and comments by Chuck appear in red, and by Betty-Ellen in green.

My opinions as to the identities of the people mentioned by Emma are just guesses, which our cousins are welcome to "second-guess"! I tried to find people who would "make sense" in the context of Emma's family and who might have been in Logan county, OH, in 1897-1898. My task wasn't helped by the existence of many people with the same names and the numerous intermarriages between Yoders, Kauffmans, Planks, etc.

It seemed obvious, though, that the "Uncle Dave" who appears throughout is David D. Yoder [YRB185 -- 1830-1922].1 David was the second husband of my great-grandmother, Elizabeth (Wilhelm) (Plank) Yoder. Emma's mother was David D. Yoder's younger sister, Mary Ellen (Yoder) Kenagy [YRB189 -- 1840-1886]. David's children were all the result of his first marriage, to Elizabeth Yoder [YR14648 -- 1835-1893].

October 29, 1897

Left Greenville October 27, 1897 at 12:15 A.M. Arrived at Urbana October 29 at 10:05 am, left Urbana at 11:43 am, arrived Bellfontaine 12:30. Emma was traveling by railroad. One could travel quickly and easily by train between most places in the Eastern half of the U.S.A. in those days. That was something we took for granted until the 1950's or '60's. Went to a "Grocery and Dry Goods Store", inquired for John Yoder Uncle Dave's nephew, John K. YODER [YRB1814 -- 1853-1930] and was directed to 206 E. Spring St. Tapped at door; Johnny John K. YODER's son met me. I asked if it was where John Yoder lived; he said "yes" invited me in, and then I told him I was his cousin, but he did not know me until I told him; and Oh! how surprised.

Am still at Johnnys this being Saturday afternoon; have had such a plesant time; so much for October 29.____

Nov. 2

Went to Lydia Planks a daughter of Rev. David PLANK [PK4282] and Mary HARTZLER [HZ1376], and a niece of great-grandma's first husband Samuel W. PLANK Saturday afternoon, Sunday Morn to church at Bethel Bethel Mennonite Church in West Liberty, from there to Aunt Lydia's, went to young people meeting at South Union yet another Mennonite church in the West Liberty area Sunday night. Stayed there until Tuesday afternoon, when Archie Archie Thomas YODER [YRB1881 -- 1862-1952], a son of Eli and Lydia YODER brought me to Lydias it had been raining since yesterday morning. Had fine time at Aunt Lydias. I can't find anybody who might qualify as Aunt Lydia, who may not be the same person as the Lydia Plank mentioned at the beginning of today's entry. There's a good possibility that one of these Lydias is Lydia B. HARTZLER Plank [HZ132a2 -- 1864-?], the wife of Jacob (Jake) PLANK, who I'm guessing at on Nov 17.

November 9

Stayed at Lydia's until Thurs when Lydia and I went to Nancy Yoders a daughter of Uncle Dave [YRB1853 -- 1864-?] who married another David YODER; that night I went to Sarah Yoders Sarah E. YODER [YRB1862 -- 1860-1940] m David B. YODER [YR146293 -- 1860-1938]; Saturday afternoon Sarah and I went to Liberty; saw Uncle Dave, Jonas Uncle Dave's younger brother Jonas C. YODER [YRB186 -- 1833-1911] who married Veronica KENAGY [KY71b -- 1836-1898]; they are Sarah's parents and Davie Uncle Dave's son David Carl YODER [YRB1854 -- 1869-?] came back to Lydias Saturday afternoon; went to Walnut Grove Rev. David PLANK's Mennonite church in Union township Sunday morning preached and sang Dutch so it was most interesting to me, went to Amos for dinner. Many people referred to German -- Deutsch -- as Dutch, hence "Pennsylvania Dutch". Mr and Mrs. John Hartzler of Bellefontaine were there; his being my second cousin; also Menno Yoder Menno S. YODER [YRB114b -- 1873-1942]; had a splendid time. Stayed all night with Amos Amos Israel YODER [YRB1148 -- 1866-1932], or possibly Amos M. YODER [YRB1816 -- 1849-1923] who was son of John YODER [YRB181 -- 1821-1873] and Barbara YODER [1820-1899], who might be the "Aunt Barbara" mentioned here and there, Mr. Glick and Miss Peachy were there also. Had a great time, sleeping that eve; came to Lydias Monday morn; began raining Sunday night, and is still at it this Tuesday morn; have had some gay times; was weighed last eve, and tipped the scales at 111 lbs. So much for today.

Nov. 14

Went to Uriah Yoder's I can't find any Uriah YODER, but Uncle David had a son Uriel YODER [YRB1852 -- 1862-1956] who isn't mentioned anywhere in this letter Thursday came home through the wind and snow; it snowed all afternoon; went with Nancy to Christ Yoder's; Ike Yoder came down in afternoon and I went home with him; Saturday Milton and I went to Bellefontaine; Isaac YODER [YRB1142 -- 1853-1923] attended Teacher's Institute in morning went to John Yoder's in afternoon; thence back to Ike's in the evening; this morn it is raining, and dreary; had a gay time coming home from Fountaine; ate bologna and crackers and saw Twin Lakes, and also other Lakes._________ such as Indian Lake?

Nov. 17

Stayed at Ike Yoder's until sunday eve, when Milton Isaac's son Milton YODER [YRB11421 -- 1879-?] brought me home; it rained all day on Sunday; had fine time, ate pop-corn; and sang in the afternoon; came back to Jake Plank's Jacob H. PLANK [PK42138 -- 1864-1943] through the rain; and spent the evening singing, talking etc.; Monday morn. it was still raining and did not stop until Tuesday afternoon. Monday afternoon Nancy and I went to Mr. Fett's Uncle Dave's niece Anna E. YODER [YRB1811 -- 1844-?] m John F. FETT [1838-?] Nancy came home that eve; Anna was also known as "Nancy", so this could explain many of the references to a Nancy! I stayed until Tuesday eve, when Isaiah Hartzler, Amos, Katie, Amanda and I came to Plank's Could "Katie" and "Amanda" be my grandma and her older sister -- Kathryn PLANK Carey [PK42885 -- 1882-1939] and Amanda PLANK Lakin [PK42881 -- 1872-1947]?2 Mr. Dan Yoder Daniel C. YODER [YR14629 -- 1825-1909] m Anna C. "Nancy" HARTZLER [HZ13221 -- 1843-1930], yet another possible Nancy, Misses Fannie Veronica "Fanny" KAUFFMAN [KF111937 -- 1867-1962] and Farmie Kauffman; messrs. Menno and Milton Yoder also being present; the evening was spent in talking, singing eating apples. etc.

This morning the ground was frozen, and it is still somewhat cold; have been here almost three weeks, and have heard from home only once: will go to Mrs. Newell's to night to attend Reading Circle of some of the teachers of Logan County. Lydia washed to day.____

Nov. 18

Milton and I went to Mr. Hugh Newell's last evening; had lovely time; there were present Mr. Hail and Miss Deitrick, and Louis Yoder the evening was spent in talking, eating apples, etc., this morning it is rather frosty and the ground is frozen. Mr. Plank "Mr. Plank" seems to refer to Rev. David PLANK and "Mrs. Plank" to his wife Mary) went to town yesterday afternoon and I received three letters. Oh! how glad I was to hear from my friends.

Nov. 27, 1897

It has been so long since I have written in here that I fear I have forgotten some of the many things that have happened. On Friday, Nov., 20, Mrs. Plank and I went to Jake Kauffman's Jacob D. KAUFFMAN [KF111521 -- 1848-1928]; stayed until Saturday afternoon, when I rode back to Lydias with Menno Yoder's. Menno S. YODER [YR146225 -- 1851-?] was Jacob's brother-in-law, having married Salome A. KAUFFMAN [KF111523 -- 1855?-?].

Last Sunday, I had such a bad cold that I did not go to church but stayed at Davies; Fannie Yoder, Verdie Verda Catherine YODER [YRB18841 -- 1892-1982] was Eli and Fannie's daughter and Aunt Lydia came there from church in the afternoon we went up to Anna's.

We went to Eli Eli YODER [YRB1884 -- 1867-1942] married Fannie STUTZMAN [1868-1900] on Wednesday.

I had to hold Clyde Clyde David YODER [YRB18842] was Eli & Fannie's son, born 4/17/1896! and he did not like me one bit; we had a lovely time. ate apples and pop-corn That evening Anna and I went down town and got some oyster crackers, and butter and oh my! but we did eat supper. Anna and Addie could be the daughters of Levi K. YODER [YRB1141 -- 1851-1935] and Fannie Z. HERTZLER [HZ13227 -- 1853-1932]; Anna YODER is [YRB11412 -- 1880-1938] and Addie YODER is [YRB11414 -- 1891-?]

I helped Anna with her work Saturday morn and in the afternoon I went down to Addie's that morning Ella came over, and Addie popped some corn; the next morn we did not get up until nine o'clock. Davie and Ella came about 10:30; Addie was not ready, so I went out to Rudy's Uncle Dave's son Rudolph YODER [YRB1855 -- 1872-?] with them; then Davie drove back, and met Jonas and Addie at the railroad, and brought them out in the evening we came back in the buggy and Davie and Jonas walked.

Wednesday morn Nancy and I washed in the afternoon, went to Christ Yoders Christian YODER YRB1149 -- 1868-1924 m Viola EMERY 1875-1905] to watch the chopping machine work; they were butchering; we washed dishes for Katie; when we came home Nancy took some of the clothes off the line and left them sit in the basket out in the yard, and the pigs got into the basket, so she had to wash some of the clothes again; I am writing this with Little Bertha, Bertha Marie YODER [YRB11491 -- 1894-?], the daughter of Christian and Viola piling quilt scraps on my right arm, and talking as hard as she can; now she is piling them on my foot and it is so hard for me to keep my foot still.

It is very foggy this morn and looks like rain. So much for this morn.

Dec. 11

Friday, December 10th Nancy and I went to Menns Yoders' Menno S. YODER [YRB114b -- 1873-1942], who was Christian's brother and had just married Catherine FETT [1875-1963] on our way home we came past the wonderful Piatt Castle and the Nash mansions; they are simply grand; we also stopped in Liberty; went to the new store and to see Uncle Dave and Davie; I received my mitten; floss and breast pieces was most awfully glad to get them.On the way home, I tormented some little youngsters and Nancy said I was bad, "but to have my fun while young", as I will take her advice.

Martez (Matthes) was there and how we did laugh at the poor, old mortal; Monday Lydia and I washed and that afternoon Sheirr (can't decipher -- Sheur?) Kauffman and wife from Pennsylvania Shem J. KAUFFMAN [KF111942 -- 1857-?] m Elizabeth HOOLEY [HL13b74 -- 1861-1933], were from Mifflin county, PA came. Mems Hartzler's wife died last eve; will be buried this afternoon (so long) Menno S. HARTZLER [HZ15a9 -- 1859-1931] m Sarah STUTZMAN [ST8524 -- 1859-1897]

Dec 16. Thursday Morn.

Aunt Fannie and I went to Eli's S. yesterday morn; stayed until after dinner, when Alpha Jonas and Fanny's son Alpha B. YODER [YRB1869 -- 1880-1958] came down and hitched their colt to Eli's buggy; then Aunt and I drove up home; Topsy did not want to go by the engine one bit, but I finally succeeded in getting her past.

Aunt went to the funeral with Elmira, and I went with Eli's. saw Sam Plank could be the son of David and Mary PLANK; wanted to know if I was not going home with him; told him I would be down week from Friday. This morning we are going to Elmira's. Jonas C. YODER had a daughter Elmira [YRB1864 -- 1864-?] who married Christian SWARTZ So much for today.

Amos Y. HARTZLER [HZ132a1 -- 1862-?] m Mary Elsie PLANK [PK42824 -- 1863-?]; another possibility for the many freferences to "Amos". The next morning Dec 31, 1897 the ground was covered with snow.

[page 26 and 27 missing] See photocopy of page 28.

Lizzie Detweiler Elizabeth DETWEILER [DT4124a -- 1867-1925] went home with them.

Samuel Headings funeral Mary STUTZMAN Headings [ST51a -- 1831-1/11/1898!] m Samuel HEADINGS [HD43 -- 1826-1902]; I rode with them as far as Jakes; I stayed there and had dinner most ready when they came home.

Sunday night we went to Young Peoples Meeting at Walnut Grove, and enjoyed the meeting, so much it was very interesting.

Jan 21

Last evening Milton took Alta and I Milton had sisters Katherine [YRB11422 -- 1880-1973] and Alta [YRB11423 -- 1882-?] to Bethel church; it was rather windy and somewhat dark. we drove Net and had such a lovely time, especially on the way home.

Jan 27

Loma and I came over to Aunt Lydias yesterday it was snowing when we came over and was cloudy all day. this morning it is lovely; the sun is shining brightly and everything looks so pretty; the ground is frozen hard, Archie and Harvey Harvey B. YODER [YRB1887 -- 1876-?] went to church at Zanesfield last evening; I am going to write some letters this morning, dropped my watch last evening and it will not run now. I wonder if I will ever learn to be careful.

Jan 28,_______Friday eve.

I wrote two letters Thursday morn. and in the afternoon Lydia and I went to Bellefontaine; it was blowing and snowing with great force, when we started, but turned off very pretty. Harvey took us to the Methodist church at Zanesfield I think one of my dad's CAREY cousins was the pastor of this church some years later last evening; they had quite an interesting meeting; Mr Casille is the minister.

I worked on my quilt to day. This has been a lovely day. The sun shone brightly most of the day and the ground thawed some. I am going to Fontaine tomorrow and Archie is going to get me a friendship plate. he; Harvey and Vernon Harvey's brother, Roy Vernon YODER [YRB1888 -- 1884-1956] went to church tonight; Lydia is churning and Aunt Lydia is reading. Too many Lydias! Aunt Lydia would seem to be Harvey and Vernon's mom, and Eli YODER's wife. She and Eli had a daughter Lydia B. YODER [YRB1886 -- 1872-1927] who could be the other Lydia here

It has been like spring the last few days and it seems so warm; we can hardly stand a fire.

Oh! what fun we did have, came very near letting a man get a "snap shot" at us and got home at 5;00 p.m. We went to Walnut Grove Suday morn; I went to Jake's for dinner and there were just seven young men present, namely Dan Yoder, Thom. Zook, Aaron, Studtz Session Detweler, Wm. Slabaugh, Milton Yoder, and Ella King; well we had quite a time.

On Monday, Nancy and I went to Mr. Fetts; I stayed until Tuesday when Isaiah took me to Alis; stayed there until yesterday then came to Lizzie Ms'.

Friday eve February 18, 1898

Lizzie M. and I went to Urbana this afternoon got my glass cut and had quite a nice time; I wrote two letters to-night; read a book to-day intitled "The Fisher-mans Daughter" twas quite interesting. Good Night.

February 21, 1898 Monday eve

It snowed last night and this morn the ground was frozen, and snow on the ground. They brought me to Jakes; Nancy and I went to Lee Yoders; about the middle of the afternoon we went to the cemetery and from there to David Planks; it snowed all-day, and was tolerably cold. So much for to-night.

Tuesday, Feb 22

Lydia and I went to Mrs. Hartzler's; had a lovely time; the Miss. Detricks were there in the afternoon; Nancy Hartzler and Miss Laura Detrick brought me to Liberty; I was at Sam's Tuesday night and Wednesday; had my pictures struck yesterday afternoon; came to Davie's last eve, spent the night and to-day with them; went to the photographers this afternoon and got the proof of my picture; it is very good!; it has been snowing slowly ever since Sunday night, but not enough to make good sleighing. Must quit because it is about time to go up town.

I went to Jonas' Thursday night and stayed until Tuesday afternoon; went to Sam's then to Uncle Davies; Saturday morn Anna and I went to Lee Kauffman's; had quite a pleasant time; Johnnie and Katie came after me Sat. afternoon. Yesterday, Milton and I went to Philadelphia and in the afternoon to Mr. Williamson's; from there to Young Peoples Meeting; had a lovely time; sat up until 11:30. My, wasn't that dreadful!

Mch.1

At Jake Kauffmans'. Matttie and I came over yesterday morn; Milton was here last evening; had a very pleasant time, only I had the stomach ache rather bad. It is somewhat cold this morn, looks like it would snow; Jake has been hauling wood, and now we are going to Amos'. So long.

Mch. 8

Was at Amos', on Tuesday, and at Jakes' Tuesday night; Nancy and I went to Aunt Barbaras, Yon Zooks' and Uriahs, Wednesday. when we got home Ala was there; Milton came after me to go to Newell's. but I could not go; Jake, Lydia and I went to Sarah's, Thursday; I stopped at Wes. Mch. 11

I was at Jake Planks' all day Tuesday; that evening Amos and Nancy Milton and the girls came down and we spent the eve playing Shakespheare and Tiddley wink, talking; and having a general good time. Nancy took me to Liberty Wednesday morn; I spent the day with Uncle Davie; that night I was at Sam's; Thursday eve went to Davies; and in the afternoon to Jonas'; Davie brought me to John M's yesterday afternoon, and such an attack of coughing as I did have, no-one knows! Davie is one of my nicest cousins. Will take the train this afternoon at 2:55.

The last part of the journal is a recipe, a couple of songs, a quilt pattern and directions to make a fancy box. Apparently Greatgrandma was good with her hands too.

1 The codes such as this which appear next to my guesses at people's identities are those which were assigned by Gingerich & Kreider in their book, or which appear at the Yoder family information web site. The birth and death dates are also based on those sources.
2 During my first study of Emma's journal, I jumped to the conclusion that these were references to my grandmother and her sister. They were Uncle Dave's stepdaughters and must have been around. However, I'm not so sure now. Many of the subsequent references to Katie seem to be to Catherine Fett Yoder. In addition, while studying my family history data base, I noticed that Amanda's daughter Rowena was born in Springfield, OH, about 30 miles away, on 22 Dec 1897. This was right in the middle of Emma's visit. Could Uncle Dave's wife, Lizzie, who isn't mentioned anywhere in the diary, have gone to Springfield to be present at Rowena's birth, then stayed awhile to help Amanda? Could 15-year-old Kate have accompanied her mom to help take care of Amanda's first child, Clint, who was 19 months old when Rowena arrived? I remember Clint as being a rather big guy. He could have been a real handful at that age. Rowena must have been a healthy baby herself; she lived almost 95 years!
