Two games were played, Santa Ana Stars against the Seal Gardens, won by Santa Ana in seven innings by a score of 9 to 3, and Santa Ana against the Hogee [sic] Flags of Los Angeles, a tie game 1 to 1. "Johnson did some great pitching in the second game. It was worth while going out to see the active young pitcher turn loose a few rifle shots from that arm of his. Meats, who caught him in the Idaho state league team in which Johnson established a world's record of 85 innings straight without a run against the pitcher, was behind the bat. Here was a combination that made the baseball world sit up and take notice, and Johnson has been keeping the world's notice ever since as a pitcher for Washington, D. C. "In the game against the Seal Gardens, Johnson played center field, Brown pitching for the Stars. Johnson made a home run, and that hit alone and his gallop showed big league timber. Clare Head, a player with the Northwest League, well known in local baseball circles, was with the Stars at shortstop, and some of this batting and base running was soul stirring to the good sized crowd of baseball enthusiasts. "It was scheduled that Santa Monica and Huntington Beach should play yesterday, but Santa Monica failed to show up. "The second game yesterday was a game of might. It was baseball, gentlemen, and no mistake. Thompson, the Hogee pitcher, arose to the occasion and divided honors with Johnson. "The two runs were made in the fourth inning. The Hogee lads made theirs and then came the Stars with the evening-up. Head slashed out a beauty for two bases, and close on him came Meats with another like it, and Head came in. "And there the teams stood to the finish in the twilight. "Scorekeeper Vegeley's story of the great game follows:" Complete box & line, with Johnson, p (4th) 3 0 0 0 0 0 11K, 0BB, 3H Stars made two errors. Snodgrass caught for Hoegees. Also, he seemed to have 3 assists and 3 SB, but I could be mistaken. 1/ 5 SAR -- SA Stars 0, @ San Pedro 0. "TWENTY-TWO TO THE BENCH SEAT Nothing to Nothing and Twelve Innings at San Pedro "Yesterday the Santa Ana boys in the Winter Baseball League played their first game away from home. They tried conclusions with San Pedro. "Santa Ana 0, San Pedro 0, 12 innings. These figures tell the story of the hard fought game, played at San Pedro yesterday. The game going 12 innings neither side scoring. The game was called at the end of the 12th inning on account of darkness. The Santa Ana outfielders were handicapped, not being able to see the ball, as the sun was in their eyes. There was no necessity for them to see the ball only on one occasion, and that was a fly to Walbridge in left field. There were only three balls that went out of the infield... "Walter Johnson, the boy who hails from the oil wells, handed 'em across for the locals. It was a case of walk right up to bat, wiggle your bat three times and walk right back to the bench with the San Pedro batters. "In the first three innings, Johnson struck out eight of the nine men who faced him, the ninth man being thrown out at first. "Johnson had speed to spare yesterday, the harbor city boys couldn't see them let alone hitting them. "For eight innings, the American League wonder held them without a hit. He allowed only two clean hits, the third being a scratch hit. In twelve innings there were 39 men that faced Johnson, and out of that 39 he sent 22 back to the bench. "Guy Meats, the Santa Ana catcher, was sick all day Saturday and all night Saturday and was not expected to play, but he played anyhow. He put up one of his best games yesterday, catching Johnson's speedy ones as if it was nothing at all... "Ford, the harbor city pitcher, although a cripple is a fine pitcher. He had fifteen strikeouts to his credit... "In only three of the twelve innings were the men of the harbor city team on bases..." Next Sunday Edison is scheduled. 1/26 SAR -- No game mentioned. It has rained all week. An article: "BIG THINGS FOR JOHNSON THIS YEAR "This morning's Los Angeles Herald has an article telling of the big jump made last year in the baseball world by minor league players, to the major league, and considerable space is devoted to Walter Johnson of Olinda, who has been pitching for the Santa Ana team in the winter league. Of Johnson the Herald says: "The sensation of the baseball world in the pitching line last season was Walter Johnson of the Washington American League team. In Johnson Manager Cantillon picked up the real big find of the year, and he ought to be the 'Whirling Noise' during the coming season. Johnson is a big, raw-boned, six- foot Westerner. He is only 20 years of age and if he takes the proper care of himself, he ought to develop into one of the most powerful men in baseball. These facts make the showing of Johnson all the more powerful and all the more valuable to the club..." The article repeats the story of Blankenship's scouting trip, Walter's first game, his difficulty fielding bunts at first, etc. 2/ 1 SAR -- SA Stars 3, @ Santa Barbara 0, in an "exhibition game". Coleman pitched a 4-hit shutout, Meats C. WJ's buddy, G. Johnson was at 1B for SB and R. Johnson in CF! 2/ 2 SAR -- It rained 1.65" The game at Santa Barbara was called off. "Johnson did not have any chance to pitch on account of rain." 2/ 9 The SAR for 2/10 was missing. 2/15 SAR -- "TWO MORE GAMES WITH JOHNSON "Walter Johnson will pitch only two more games in Santa Ana for the local team in the winter league. The game tomorrow at Hawley's Park should be a good one. The Christopher Levys allowed the Santa Anans but two runs in their last game here, Dec. 29th, making a close game of 2 to 0 in favor Santa Ana." 2/16 SAR -- SA Stars 1, Levys 0, 13 inns. Cody & Meats were the battery for SA against the "ice cream team". "Santa Ana still leads in the percentage column... Next Sunday the crack San Pedro nine will play here... This could explain his absence from the 11/1 & 11/8 games. 11/ 1 SAR -- SA Yellow Sox 3, Hoegee 6. Morrison pitched, no mention of WJ. 11/ 7 SAR -- There have been regular Orange City news columns, but with what little sports news there was being of high school games. "Even though Chance is to go East today, the Elks' ball game will be played next Sunday at Chutes Park. Chance was to have captained one team and Dillon the other, but with Chance absent there will be a large number of high-class players in the line-up, including Walter Johnson, Dollie Gray, Orvie Overall and Stovall. The Philadelphia team beat the locals three out of five games last week and the dope is that Los Angeles will beat the Nationals, for Philadelphia beat them in every game the two teams played together. "The Nationals are apparently not as strong as Philadelphia and yet they are carrying two of the noted pitchers of the country in Walter Johnson of the Washington team, and the $11,000 beauty, Marquard, whom the New York Giants bought. Both of these will be seen in the games here this week and it is probable that Johnson will pitch today. He arrived here yesterday in company with catcher Myers, and pitcher Charley Hall and the other members of the team reached this city last night. These games will be the last exhibitions of professional ball that can be seen here for some weeks." 11/11 LAT -- All-Nationals 10, Los Angeles 5.
