LOG OF NEWS FROM LONG BEACH NEWSPAPERS (1904-06) LBTe was scanned from its first issue (12/26/04) through end of April 1905. It carried little baseball news. More news on bowling or girls basketball! High school baseball articles appeared Saturday or Monday. Following were only ones I could find on LBHS games: 2/ 4 LBHS 1, @ Harvard 2. This opened the County League's season. 2/25 LBHS 2, SAHS 8. At Athletic Park in LB. Coleman had 11K. Lineups were given but little else. Reporting was credited to LA Times. 4/15 LBHS 7, Monrovia HS 1. Next Saturday's game will be @ LAHS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LBP was scanned from mid-November through Tue 6/6. This seems to be a much better edited morning paper with occasional tidbits of other baseball activity besides LBHS games. I thought I could find more detailed news here, but this didn't turn out to be the case. There was also a fair amount of coverage of other sports. Some of the meager baseball news was hidden as brief items in Local News or School Notes. 11/19 LBHS 7, Brownsberger School of L.A. 4. 1/28 LBHS 5, Woodbury Bus Col 13, in a "practice" game. 2/ 4 Complete box score of LBHS @ Harvard game. 2/12 Semi-pro double-header at Chutes Park in LA which was well-attended by LB fans. Hamburgers beat Owls 6-3 and Ventura 3-2. 2/25 The Chicago Cubs entrained for spring training at Santa Monica! The LBHS vs SAHS game was mentioned, but only lineups were given. 3/10 LBHS 12, Atlantic Ave grammar school 8, in a "practice" game. 3/25 LBHS 1, LAHS 4. No details, other than the fact that the LAHS pitcher, George Ely, was one-armed. 3/30 The PCL season opened at Chutes Park. 3/31 LBHS 5, @ Harvard 7. 4/ 1 In a dispatch from San Luis Obispo, it is mentioned that the uniforms worn by "Polytechnic" (Cal Poly) were made by Hoegee of LA "and have been found stout enough to slide to base on". 4/12 LBHS 12, USS Chicago 6. 4/13 LBHS 15, USS Chicago 2. 4/15 LBHS defeated Monrovia HS. It was implied that the three wins in one week broke a long losing streak. 4/20 They were to play LAHS today but the game was postponed and LBHS ended up playing its faculty yesterday and winning 6-3. 4/27 LBHS 6, Compton HS 1. Complete box. Compton referred to as the "invincible Compton team", having beaten LBHS earlier this year. This was their worst defeat in two years. 4/29 Was to play Poly at 9 am @ Harvard, but no news found. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LBTr was scanned from December (November was missing) through Tue 6/6. 2/ 4 A brief article on the Harvard game in 2/6 paper. 2/11 LBHS was to play @ Compton, according to Friday's paper but no writeup in Monday's. 2/25 A story with lineups and line score of the SAHS game appeared in 2/27 paper. Coleman allowed LBHS 3 hits. 3/ 4 LBHS lost to Poly. Score not given. 3/11 Game may have been cancelled due to 1.19" of rain. 3/18 Ditto, it rained 2.63" on Friday & Saturday. 3/25 The 4-1 loss to LAHS mentioned in 3/27 paper. An article on athletics in the 3/25 paper mentioned under baseball: "Several games were played before Christmas and the majority were won." 3/31 A brief mention of Harvard game in next day's paper. 4/ 8 LBHS was to play Compton HS, according to the 4/4 issue, but no story ever appeared. There was huge coverage of the "basket ball girls" playing LA. 4/13 A box score of the USS Chicago game appeared in the 4/14 issue. 4/14 And of the Monrovia game in the 4/15 issue. 4/22 LBHS was to play LAHS according to the 4/18 paper. 4/27 LBHS 5, Compton HS 1. Note different score! This was supposed to have been Compton's first loss in interscholastic play in two years. 5/ 6 Game against Whittier HS was forfeited by the latter, according to 5/4 paper. 5/19 A game between the sophs and juniors with many of the LBHS team members participating. There were several other intramural games this week. 5/29 Compton HS was awarded the pennant through a vote of the scholastic athletic association forfeiting several of LAHS' victories. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All three papers were scanned for possible Olive vs Long Beach games from 7/29 through 11/18/06. Although there was a fair amount of sports coverage, and front page coverage of two Police Dept vs Fire Dept games, there wasn't any evidence that a LB town team was in existence. The LB vs HB game of 11/18, which was mentioned in the Huntington Beach News as being scheduled, wasn't even mentioned. =============================================================================== THE NEWS SOURCES: LBP -- The Long Beach Daily Press, published each morning except Sunday. 5 cents a copy. 8 pages plus official city documents.
