LOG OF FULLERTON HIGH SCHOOL GAMES, ETC. 1898 4/23 Fullerton High defeated Santa Ana High last Saturday, 16-6. The SAHS boys were referred to as the "pumpkin rollin' team". 5/14 "The Fullerton High School nine defeated the Stars [who were they?] on Saturday, by a score of 10 to 6." 6/ 3 Fullerton high lost to Westminster last Saturday, 17-9. FHS has lost only two games in its season. =============================================================================== 1899 2/ 3 Fullerton high was to play "a team from Placentia here" tomorrow. 3/10 "A game of baseball will be played tomorrow at 2 p.m. by the Santa Ana high school and Fullerton high school nines." 4/14 "The Fullerton high school team was defeated by the Whittier [College!] baseball nine last Saturday, the score standing 16 to 5 in favor of the Whittierites." 5/ 5 "The high school team defeated the Santa Ana nine Saturday by a score of 10 to 3." =============================================================================== All issues missing from 8/18/1899 through 9/7/1901, then: 11/ 9 "The Long Beach high school baseball team defeated the Fullerton nine Saturday [11/2] by a score of 7 to 4." 11/30 "The Long Beach high school baseball team mopped the face of the earth with the Fullerton high school nine Saturday [11/23], the score being 21 to 3. Boys, you must do better or stop playing ball." =============================================================================== 1902 There were frequent mentions all year of the Fullerton High School team, capped by the 6/14 victory over Redlands for the "Southern California Interscholastic" title. 11/20 "Oil well nine defeated Fullerton high school team in a ball game here Saturday afternoon [11/15]. The locals played a good game but were unable to hold the oil lads down at the bat. Score, 7 to 6." =============================================================================== 1903 There is, once again, fairly regular coverage of the Fullerton high school team, although the names of the players aren't usually mentioned. Archibald was the only pitcher mentioned. Teams played included Santa Ana, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ontario. =============================================================================== 1904 There was no news at all of baseball in most issues of the FT. 6/ 9 FT -- "The ball teams of the Norwalk and Fullerton high schools crossed bats on the local grounds Saturday [6/4], the visitors winning by a score of 5 to 0." [This report of a NORWALK HS, which I found after the story of the 1905 game, tends to confirm that there was indeed a high school there!] 11/17 "The high school boys have organized a base ball team, with Wm. Yaeger as manager, and is ready to challenge surrounding high school nines for match games." 12/ 1 In a SAHS football game, the left tackle is listed as "G. Coleman". 12/24 WN -- Under "La Habra News": "The La Habra baseball team crossed bats Saturday last [12/17] with the Fullerton high school team. The La Habra boys were holding a winning point in the game until the third inning, when Clarence Nunamaker, the pitcher, hurt two of his fingers and then he threw the game away. The boys feel confident they will stand up all right when the Fullerton boys come to La Habra two weeks from today." [A 12/31 game, if that was what this article was referring to, was probably cancelled due to the rains which fell 12/30.] [The Reference librarian at La Habra public library says La Habra High School didn't come into existence until 1954. Until then La Habra kids commuted to Fullerton High. This was obviously some kind of informally-organized team. In some of the other La Habra columns, there are references to the "boys" playing the "married men".] =============================================================================== 1905 1/ 7 WN -- The Whittier HS team, which had no home ball field, "obtained the privilege to practice on the grounds at Los Nietos." WHS is a member of the "Los Angeles County Scholastic Athletic League", a schedule of whose games appears in this issue. It doesn't include any Orange County schools, or Downey HS, but it does include Long Beach HS, which was mentioned by some old-timers as a FHS opponent during 1905. The schedule runs Saturdays from 2/4 to 5/20. 1/14 The Fullerton High School game as reported in the 1/19 FT: "Fullerton high school nine defeated La Habras in that valley Saturday by a score of 7 to 0. Batteries, Fullerton, Chas. Hansen and Arthur Hartung; Hansen bottled up the valley lads, not allowing them to make a hit." and in the 1/21 WN, under "La Habra News": "The La Habra boys crossed bats with the Fullerton boys Saturday last and were defeated by a score of 7 to 0. The boys have confidence if they can get their full team together that they can stand a fair chance. They have always had to play without from two to four of their best men. Next time they will have a full line-up." 1/28 AG -- In a track meet between SA & Anaheim high schools, "Coleman" placed second in the shot put! 2/18 FT -- "In a ball game here Saturday between the high school teams of Norwalk and this place the former were victorious by a score of 7 to 3. The battery for the home team was Hanson, Johnson and Collins..." [According to the Norwalk public library AND the Downey historical society, there wasn't any Norwalk high school until many years later!?] No details of this game and very little coverage of subsequent FHS games. There is, however, regular and interesting coverage of Santa Ana HS' games, usually taken from the SA Blade. Today, for instance, SAHS and the SA Elks played to a 1 to 1 tie. "G. Coleman" pitched 11 innings. Cravath and Dungan, obviously the Elks' big stars, were missing from their lineup. SAHS will be playing Orange HS and Long Beach HS in coming weeks. 2/25 FT -- SAHS beat Whittier 2-1 with Coleman pitching an 11-inning four- hitter, and LBHS 8-2, also a 4-hitter by Coleman, who got several hits. SAHS was charging 25 cents admission to their games! Sometimes stories lag an issue or two behind, so it's never quite clear when a game was played. Maybe one of these games was on Washington's Birthday? (LBTe has LBHS game as 2/25) 3/12 FT -- There were heavy rains so apparently no baseball activity this weekend. 1.19", according to LBTr. 3/19 FT -- Again, there was much rain and no mention of baseball. 2.63", according to LBTr. 3/25 FT -- SAHS beat Riverside 2-1, with Coleman allowing 6 hits and fanning 14. No news of any other baseball games this weekend. 4/ 8 FT -- SAHS lost to Occidental College 5-2. "Next Sunday [?] the local boys will play the Fullerton High School team on the local grounds." 4/15 FT -- FHS 0, @ SAHS 0, 15 inn. The whole "story" follows... "A fast game of amateur baseball was witnessed at Santa Ana Saturday when clubs from the Fullerton and Santa Ana high schools contested the second of a series of games to be played for the championship of Orange County. Brilliant work in the field and box were features of the game. Fifteen innings were played without either side scoring. Batteries: Fullerton, Johnson and Williams; Santa Ana, Coleman and Wilkinson." AG -- "A tie score of zero to zero after fifteen innings of good playing by each team was the outcome of a baseball game at Santa Ana on Saturday between a team from that town and the Fullerton high schools. The boys say it was one of the best games ever played there. Santa Ana made seven hits and Fullerton two. Johnson for Fullerton struck out 27 men, Coleman of Santa Ana, 18. The game was almost errorless, both schools getting in good team work. The tie will be played off at a return game." 5/18 FT -- Members of the 1905 graduating class are listed. Among them is Charles Hansen, who pitched the no-hitter against La Habra. 5/21 FT -- SAHS will be playing "State School", Poly High of LA, and finally LAHS on 6/3 for the state championship! 5/27 FT -- SAHS beat Poly, 1-0, with Coleman pitching a 1-hitter, fanning 15, and driving in the only run! 6/ 3 FT -- SAHS beat LAHS, 1-0. Another 1-hitter for Coleman. 500 people were in attendance as SAHS "won the honor of being hailed as the undisputed champion of Southern California." Hank's only contemporary information on Walter's high school games, at least in the word processor files he gave me, is from the Santa Ana Evening Blade. =============================================================================== THE NEWS SOURCES: AG -- The Anaheim Gazette, published every Thursday. FT -- The Fullerton Tribune, published every Thursday. LBTe -- The Long Beach Daily Telegram, published every afternoon except Sunday. LBTr -- The Long Beach Evening Tribune. Similar to LBTe. WN -- The Whittier News, "published every Saturday". There was a regular column headed "The Valley", which included news items from Rivera, La Habra, etc. In March, 1905, it became the Daily News. It was then [usually] published every day except Sunday. 2 cents a copy. 8 pages.
